SSJ
The SSJ level is the hardest level (but not the strongest) level to achieve. A saiyan needs to be strong and become very angry to became a SSJ. (This is not the case for chibi-trunks, and goten.) When a saiyan become a SSJ, their muscle increases, their eyes turn to a light green colour, their hair turns gold, and there is a golden aura around them. SSJ kan be split up in four forms.
SSJ 1 level 1
This is what Goku reaches on Namek, in the fight against Freeza.
SSJ 1 level 2
This is the form in which Vegeta fights while fighting Cell. It's more powerful and faster than the normal SSJ form.
SSJ 1 level 3 (USSJ)
USSJ (SSJ 1 level 3) is close to SSJ2. When a saiyan is a USSJ, their muscle mass increases a lot, their hair become a bit longer, and there is a brighter golden glow around them. However, when a saiyan is a USSJ, they become very slow, because of the great muscle mass. Goku realized this and he didn't stay as a USSJ. Trunks reached this form first while fighting Cell.
SSJ 1 level 4
This is practically the same as USSJ, only the muscles (power) are reduced so the speed is better. It's the SSJ1 form which is best balanced between speed and power. Goku uses this form to fight against Perfect Cell.
SSJ2
SSJ2 is the next major saiyan level after SSJ1. The only way to reach SSJ2 is by anger. When a saiyan reaches SSJ2, their muscle mass increases again, their hair gets even longer, and there is a bright golden glow that surrounds them and it is often accompanied by zaps of silver lightning bolts. Their speed increases as well. Gohan is the first person to reach SSJ2.
SSJ3
SSJ3 is yet another level a saiyan can reach, but only 3 characters (two of them by fusion) can reach this level. You need to train extremely hard in order to reach this level. When a saiyan becomes SSJ3, their appearance changes greatly. They lose their eyebrows, their hair grows immensely (their hair is around their knees) and their muscle mass increases slightly. However, SSJ3 takes up a lot of energy, so a saiyan cannot usually stay SSJ3 for a long time. Goku, Gogeta and Gotenks are the only people to go SSJ3.
Mystic
Mystic isn't an SSJ level, but it does belong in this section. Someone can become Mystic after have had the power-up ceremony by Rou Kaioushin. The only one that can become mystic in the series is Son Gohan. Going Mystic is pretty much the same way as going SSJ, only a bit different. But it needs to be activated in the same way as SSJ has to be activated. According to Rou Kaioushin, SSJ is a form which is the wrong way of becoming more powerful. SSJ costs too much energy because of the transformation and the glow. When someone goes mystic, all his hidden power is revealed.
SSJ4
Some people think that this is yet another saiyan level because they transform, but others disagree because they lose the golden hair, and green eyes. I personally think that SSJ4 isn't a SSJ level, but just a form between a saiyan and an oozaru, and the SSJ4 wasn't created by Akira Toriyama (he didn't work on DBGT). There are only 3 characters that can become SSJ4. (Goku and Vegeta, although Vegeta cheated, and Gogeta) When a saiyan becomes SSJ4, their appearance changes greatly again. They first grow back their tail, then they have to look at a full moon to become a golden oozaru. Next, they must focus and use all of their power and energy to become enraged, and when this is done, they will transform into SSJ4. A SSJ4 has black hair, and red fur on their chest and arms. SSJ4 has no downsides and is the strongest a single character can become. SSJ4 Gogeta is the strongest character in the whole anime, but he is a fusion character. Gogeta SSJ4 has red hair, and brwon fur on his chest and arms. Vegeta cheated to reach this stage by having Bulma create a weapon called the "Brute Ray" which makes a saiyan transform into SSJ4.
Oozaru
When a Saiyan stares at a full moon, he/she will change into a 45-foot tall, monsterous monkey or gorilla called a Oozaru. This is possibly the most powerful level under SSJ3. All Saiyan (excluding Goku and Gohan) will be able to control themselves during this stage. It doesn't matter which full moon they look at. (In Dragonball GT, Goku turned Oozaru by looking at the full Earth from Space. And, Vegeta had the ability to create a pocket-sized full moon when he first arrived on Earth that made him turn into the Oozaru.) A Saiyan must have a tail to be able to turn Oozaru. If the tail is cut off, they revert to normal. If the tail is pulled out by the roots, the Saiyan will not turn Oozaru ever again.
Golden Oozaru
A level that was achieved by Goku, Baby-Vegeta and Vegeta in Dragon Ball GT. This is the most powerful form of Oozaru, actually, the most powerful of all stages that a Saiyan can achieve. The main physical difference with the normal Oozaru, is that the fur is yellow instead of brown.
